Get My Truck Estimate →A professional car wrap in Chicago costs $2,850–$3,800 and is completed in 2–3 days. A quality custom paint job runs $3,000–$10,000+ and takes 1–3 weeks. The wrap protects the factory paint, is fully reversible, and is generally tax deductible as a business advertising expense. Paint is permanent. Wraps are not. If you want to change the look of your car every few years, wrap wins every time.
A car wrap installed with cast vinyl at Chicago Fleet Wraps is rated for 5–7 years. Chicago's climate is harsh. Road salt, freeze-thaw cycles, summer UV. Our Avery Dennison and 3M cast vinyl is engineered for it. Calendered vinyl (used by cheaper shops) shrinks, cracks, and lifts within 1–2 years. We never use it. Every car wrap we install is backed by a 2-year workmanship warranty and the manufacturer's 5-year material warranty.
A color change wrap is cast vinyl laid over the paint your car left the factory with. Nothing is sanded, scuffed or sprayed. The paint sits underneath the film, shielded from UV, road grit and the salt this city puts down from November through March. When the wrap comes off, the car is the color it was the day you bought it.
That reversibility is the practical reason most of our car customers choose vinyl over a respray. A leased car goes back at the end of its term with no color question attached to it. A car you intend to sell keeps its original paint. Across 19,400+ vehicles wrapped we hold zero verified paint damage claims.
The paint does have to be sound before film goes on. Vinyl bonds to whatever is already there, so it will not hide a dent and it will not hold on a panel where the clearcoat is already flaking. We check for that before quoting. If a panel needs attention first you hear about it then, not after the install.
Matte reads flat and kills reflections, which makes body lines look sharper than they do in gloss. It also shows fingerprints, and it wants a vinyl sealant rather than wax. Satin sits between matte and gloss and is the most forgiving finish to live with day to day. Gloss looks closest to paint and cleans up the easiest of the three.
Color shift moves between two colors depending on where you stand and what the light is doing, which is why it photographs so differently from every angle. Chrome delete is not a full wrap at all. It is blacking out window trim, badges and grille surrounds, and it is the least expensive way to change how a car reads from the curb.
All of it is cast vinyl, printed and installed in house at our Portage Park shop. We install Avery Dennison cast film rated for 5 to 7 years of outdoor service life. That rating is a service life, not a warranty. The warranty is 2 years on our workmanship and 5 years on the material.
Four things change a consumer wrap price more than anything else: how much surface the vehicle has, how complicated its panels are, how much of it you want covered and which finish you pick.
Surface area is the obvious one, and a compact crossover has less of it than a full size pickup. Panel complexity matters just as much. Deep recesses, sharp creases, mirror caps and door handles all take time to wrap properly, so a car with a lot of them takes longer than its size alone suggests. Coverage is your call, either a full wrap or a partial that covers the panels people actually look at. Finish is the last variable, since color shift and chrome films cost more per yard than a standard gloss or matte.
Design is included in the price of a full wrap. We do not bill it separately, and you approve a layout before anything is printed.
Chicago has dozens of wrap shops. Most are fine. A few are great. Here's how to tell the difference. And what separates shops that do 50 wraps a year from shops like us that do 19,400+.
The answer should be Avery Dennison MPI 1105 or 3M IJ280. If they say "premium vinyl" without naming the manufacturer, they're using budget material. If they mention any brand you don't recognize, that's calendered vinyl and it will fail within 2 years.
In Chicago, this matters. Vinyl applied in cold or hot conditions doesn't adhere correctly. The adhesive needs 68–75°F to activate properly. Any shop working in an unheated garage in winter is producing inferior installs.
A legitimate installer warrants their workmanship. Our standard is 2 years. Lift edges, peeling, or application failures within that window are fixed at no charge. A shop that won't warranty work doesn't believe in it.
Portfolio photos are easy to curate. Asking to see a vehicle they wrapped 6 months ago tells you everything about how the install holds up over time. We welcome this request.
Chicago winters are hard on vehicles. Salt, freeze-thaw cycling, and UV exposure in summer are the three main threats to your wrap's lifespan. Here's the maintenance protocol we give every customer:
Road salt accelerates edge lift. A quick rinse. Even touchless. Removes salt before it works under edges.
Brush car washes abrade the surface over time. Touchless is acceptable; brushes are not. Use a vinyl-safe soap.
Wax creates glossy spots on flat finishes. Use a spray vinyl sealant designed for matte surfaces instead.
If an edge starts to lift, it's a 5-minute fix. Or a peeled panel in two weeks. Call us. We handle warranty work fast.
UV exposure and freeze-thaw are the primary life reducers. Indoor parking can add 1–2 years to a wrap's life in Chicago's climate.
EV charging cables and charging port covers need extra attention during washes. We wrap around charging ports. Not over them. Routine is the same: hand wash, no brush, rinse salt in winter.
Lower rocker panels and wheel wells accumulate salt and road debris faster. Pay extra attention to these areas during winter rinses. Check rocker seams monthly for early lift.
Schedule removal before lease turn-in. We remove wraps as a service and the factory paint will be in better shape than if it had been exposed. Book at least 2 weeks before turn-in date.
Drop off Monday. Pick up Thursday or Friday. Free estimate, no obligation.

Three things determine whether your wrap looks right in year three: the film (cast vinyl, never calendered), the installer’s hours on your kind of panel work, and how the shop handles edges and post-heating. None of those show up on a map radius.
