What an R1T or R1S Needs That a Steel Van Does Not

Rivian body panels are wide and mostly flat, so printed graphics lay down with less distortion than they do on a sedan. The work is in the breaks. On the R1T the gear tunnel doors hinge straight through the bodyside, so the artwork gets split at the hinge line, installed with the doors open, and post-heated along both lips. Skip the post-heat and the film creeps the first time a driver loads the tunnel on a cold morning.

The stadium headlight surrounds, the front trunk lid and the charge port door are separate pieces with tight returns. Each one gets its own relief cut instead of a stretched panel pulled over the gap. Door handle pockets get wrapped or masked, never bridged. A bridged pocket looks right for a week and then lifts at the edge.

On the R1S the rear liftgate sets the limits. The recessed plate pocket and the upper lip take two pieces so the seam hides under the lip instead of landing on a sightline. The glass roof runs most of the cabin, which takes the roof out of the design and moves the weight of the layout onto the lower doors and quarter panels. If a logo was drawn to sit on the roof, you hear that at the mockup stage, not after the vinyl is cut.

Aluminum and composite panels

Aluminum sheds heat faster than steel, so a panel that feels warm in the middle can still be too cold at the edge in January. The vehicle comes up to temperature indoors before the first panel goes on. Every surface is washed and degreased, then the seams get wiped again right before film touches them. A Rivian that arrives with a freshly repainted panel gets a call to the body shop first, because new paint still off-gassing under cast vinyl is where adhesion failures start.

How a Rivian Wrap Gets Scheduled

Most Rivian owners never drive to the shop. We pick up in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Will and McHenry counties and bring the vehicle back when it is finished. Installs run in five indoor bays inside roughly 6,000 square feet of dedicated installation space, and secure indoor overnight storage means a two-day job never sits outside in salt spray between shifts.

The itemized quote goes out within 24 hours once we know the model, the coverage level and whether the finish is a color change or printed graphics. Design comes before anything is cut: two in-house designers build the mockup on the R1T, R1S or EDV template, and revisions keep going until you approve it. Design is part of the wrap price, not a line item on the side.

Printing is in-house on two HP Latex 560 printers and an Epson SureColor R5070, up to 59 inches wide, with SEAL laminating equipment for the overlaminate pass. Nothing goes to a trade printer, so reprinting one panel mid-install costs a few hours of shop time instead of a week of shipping.

Film, Finish and What Is Covered

Printed commercial graphics on a Rivian go on in Avery Dennison MPI 1105 or 3M IJ180-CV3 cast vinyl, finished with a 3M 8518 gloss overlaminate. The overlaminate earns its keep in this market: road salt and winter wash chemicals attack a print face long before they bother the adhesive. Color change work uses 3M 2080 or Avery J55C instead, because an unprinted color film does not need the laminate pass and holds a cleaner satin or matte surface without it.

Expected service life on a Rivian in these films is 5 to 7 years in Chicago weather. That is a service life, not a warranty. Workmanship is covered for 2 years, and the material carries a 5-year material warranty. Removal is the other half of it: cast film comes off in sheets with heat and leaves the factory finish behind, which is the whole argument for vinyl on a leased R1S.

Living with the wrap

Hand wash it. Touchless is fine. Brush tunnels catch edges and lift them. Keep the pressure washer off the seams and off the gear tunnel lips, and rinse winter salt off the lower panels and rocker area when you get the chance, because salt sitting in an edge is what works film loose. Damage is a panel problem, not a wrap problem: we reprint and replace that piece, which is the practical reason every Rivian layout stays on file after the install.

Wrapping an EDV Fleet Without Parking the Route

A delivery operator cannot hand over every van at once, so EDV work runs in waves. We take a batch, wrap it, bring it back, and take the next batch, which keeps routes covered while the fleet converts. Before the first batch we survey the yard: photograph each unit, record the body configuration and flag the vans already carrying decals or an older wrap, because removal time belongs in the schedule instead of in a surprise.

Artwork gets built once per body configuration, not once per van. The per-unit marks that change sit on their own layer: fleet numbers, door identifiers and the small compliance decals each operator places in its own spot. A van that gets reassigned then needs one small reprint rather than a new wrap.

Volume discounts start at 2 vehicles and apply per contract, so a fleet converting in waves under one agreement is priced on the full count, not on whatever showed up in the first batch.
